WHAT IS DIGITAL PRINTING?

Digital printing presses utilize modern technology, translating digital-based images directly onto label material by jetting ink onto the substrate as it passes through the press.  Digital inkjet printing presses utilize the “4 Color Process” method, where ink is applied based on a subtractive color model to achieve vivid and precise colors using a combination of cyan, magenta, yellow and black (CMYK).

HOW DOES DIGITAL PRINTING WORK?

Inkjet technology recreates digital art files by jetting ink onto label material as it is fed through the digital press at high speeds.  There are separate ink cartridges, each containing one color component from the CMYK combination.  As the label substrate moves through the press machine at high speeds, these inkjet cartridges apply the correct combination of CMYK ink to achieve a vibrant, color-accurate print.  The four-color process method for applying ink is beneficial for complex designs, as there is no limit to the number of colors printed within a single label.

WHEN TO CHOOSE DIGITAL PRINTING

The digital printing process requires minimal pre-press assembly, allowing for fast turn-around times.  As an on-demand printing solution, digital printing allows for last-minute changes and accommodates variable data items, such as sequential barcodes and consecutive numbering.  Digital printing is a good match for smaller volume production, seasonal items, complex color combinations, rush orders and customized items.

WHEN TO CHOOSE FLEXOGRAPHIC PRINTING

A popular alternative to digital printing, flexography is an economical choice for large-quantity label production and suitable for jobs with complex artwork and unique label applications.  This printing style is compatible with a wide range of materials and ink-types, making flexography an ideal match for even the most unique label designs & applications.  Flexography is a good choice for both porous and nonporous label substrate and is compatible with a wide variety of finishing options, such as foils and varnishing.
